Artist's Statement

The majority of my paintings are investigations of landscape – the colors of changing seasons, the form, texture and flow of organic shapes. I am equally interested in the air and space surrounding objects, the play of weather and light, and the sometimes abstract nature of the patterns of our world. Recently I have been experimenting with more abstract forms with an emphasis on the impression or emotion of a moment or fragment of my life experience. "Night Fishing on Piney Creek", for example, is created from the memories of the star-filled iridescent nights of my childhood fishing experiences on Kent Island. I work in a variety of media – oil, acrylic and encaustic wax. I am drawn to the intricacies or mini- landscapes created in a work through the use of texture, brushwork and glazing.

I have a BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) where I studied with Abby Sangiamo, Raul Middleman and colorist Reba Stewart. I earned an MLA from Johns Hopkins University in 1999. Information about my graduate thesis "Kent Island – The Land That Once Was Eden", published by the Press at The Maryland Historical Society can be seen on this link to my Prose.

In 2007 I won a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award in the Playwriting category for my screenplay “Divine Intervention”. This story chronicles my adventures in 1960’s Baltimore and my friendship with future John Water’s star, Divine. I’d love to see it on the screen but not sure how I’m going to do that!
