The ocean can be placid or threatening, raging or still, dangerous yet peaceful. In all its many moods, it is a place of magic. The life that exists under the deep stillness or the churning surf is also mysterious for most of us. Stories and myths abound and can be easily dismissed, yet scientists routinely discover aquatic life not previously documented. What is under the water? This painting is worked in acrylic on canvas. I used pumice gel and modeling paste to mimic the roughness of surf, and smooth and more serene patches of various blues to indicate the deeper, more tranquil expanse of ocean stretching beyond the shore. For those that appreciate color interactions as I do, I’d like to mention that the apparent purple shades are actually cobalt blue. Cobalt blue, in other applications might appear a truer blue, but near the more green turquoise shades, it does indeed read as purple. I’ve indicated aquatic plants with built up lines, and used Golden’s iridescent copper to indicate that which is unseen and unexplored.
